Balancing progress

The good news is that this year of reading I have yet to have one day without reading.

The not so great news is that I have not yet catch the rythm I need to get to my goal.

That’s why I have deployed my plan to get back on track, which originally was to read about 9,000 in January, pretty farfetched.

So came up with a three month rollout, and for the month of January it came to be a total of 6,505 pages, from which, I still have 6,076 to go.

I just have passed the halfway of Robin Hobb’s Assassin Apprentice, currently on page 214, and started re-reading one of my favorite comic story arc, Planet Hulk.

Let’s chip away at those pages.

For now, I am off to read.

Happy 129th birthday to Professor Tolkien

A long time ago, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, a remarkable writer was born that came and change the world of fantasy literature forever.

I place The Lord of the Rings in the top place of my favorite books, this is mostly because it was that one book that got me really into reading, but most importantly I read them during a really dark emotional period for me.

I don’t say this lightly, but it help me to keep afloat, and not to sick on a really dark chasm.

For that I am forever grateful.

So rise a glass in salute, and may the wonder of Middle-Earth never ends.

Balancing

It was nearly a month since I updated my digital reading files, also known as the keepers of the numbers, they contain every single thing I have read, and/or planned to read.

Over the years I have narrowed it down to two files.

As my update progress I found the next challenge waiting at the end of a spreadsheet.

I had a notion of how far behind my reading schedule is, but over 9,000 pages, I need to fix this now.

I probably take this next three months to achieve this balance, let’s see how this progresses.

For now, I am off to read.

The beginning of a new year

Yesterday was a day to tidy up, and to start this new year the best way possible.

I wanted to start this year of my precious blog by saluting all who are kind enough to accompany me on this journey, and to share some of the numbers from 2020.

Although I say some a slight decrease of traffic from the previous year, it still was an amazing response to each and every post.

I almost hit the 2,000 mark, but this year I planned to post more often and with some new material lined up, I am sure it will be another great year of blogging.

But the most satisfying is to see that each year I reach new countries, and I am more than grateful to share these journey with such a diverse audience.

Concerning my numbers for this year of reading, I can officially say that year thirteen will not be my worst, for I have surpassed the numbers of year 4, which I had a total of 8,730 pages, and I am currently looking at a total of 8,804 pages, this, with 155 days left on my year of reading, which I have stated in passed post is going to be a bit shorter, for I am adjusting my finishing date to coincide with my birthday.

There are still 29,180 pages left on my goal of reading for this year, so with that in mind.

I am off to read.

Plans for the final day of the year

Yesterday I finished reading a couple of graphic novels.

Both of them were second volumes of story I have been meaning to read, Moonshine and Agent of the Empire.

Two totally different tones for each story, Werewolves and jar Whiskey, against intergalactic espionage, but really enjoyable.

Today will be pretty similar, we will have an early celebratory dinner, and probably celebrate the turning of the year in our warm and cozy bed.

This of course with some reading material.

Some Morrison and Miller to close out the year.

For now, I am off to read.

The last breathes of 2020

With this bizarre year almost at its end, I plan to end it doing some of my favorite things.

To start, I’ll cook a traditional Mexican dish, at least for my family, to celebrate the end of this shit of an excuse of year we called 2020.

I’ll post some pictures of the end product.

The other two things to end this year right, firstly, is to fatten up my bookshelves for next year.

The newest arrivals from independent Mexican publishing house, Paraiso Perdido.

And my second, and honestly favorite end of year tradition, is trying some new spirit from the ever growing list of new takes on our rich tradition of beverages, for this occasion it will be a small bottle of Mezcal Arriba Juarez

This one came with some other goodies as company.

I sincerely hope that you are keeping safe and healthy, and that the upcoming year will be far better than the one we are about to leave.

For now, I am off to read, and prepare my end of year report.

Final numbers of “Seven of reading “

What an amazing week of reading.

I was on a reading slump , this week was a much needed jolt of energy to move forward with the rest of this year.

Concerning the 21 tasks that comprised the week , I am glad to inform that 20 were completed, leaving only read 6 hours in one day, it was part of the last day , and honestly I only completed half of it.

The greatest thing was to finish the seventh book of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Reaper’s Gale, I have been working on it for a while as the threat of The Crippled God gets closer to blow everything away.

The other task from the last day was to start a new book, I did not only that but also started a new series from critically acclaimed author Robin Hobb.

But the most important thing was the sheer amount of total pages, 2,577, this over 1 book, 4 comic books, and 13 graphic novels.

I’ll try keep this pace up to close this bizarre year with a bang.

For now, I am off to read.

Last day of “Seven days of reading “

Yesterday was probably the most successful day of the whole week.

I completed the three tasks of the day, and to top it off the whole left from friday, read 200 pages from one book, which I believed to be one of the hardest to achieve, alongside read for 6 hours, which is part of today’s challenge.

So, 18 out of 18 ,and one more day to go.

  1. Read 50 pages outside
  2. Read 2 printed graphic novels
  3. Read 3 single issue comic books
  4. Read 300 total pages
  5. Read 1 digital graphic novel
  6. Read 2 digital graphic novels
  7. Read 50 pages in bed
  8. Read for 2 hours
  9. Read 300 total pages
  10. Read 100 pages on 1 room
  11. Read 50 pages while drinking red wine
  12. Read 300 total pages
  13. Read 50 pages while drinking coffee
  14. Read 50 pages after midnight
  15. Read 200 pages from one book
  16. Read 2 printed graphic novels
  17. Read for 4 hours
  18. Read 500 total pages

Now let’s talk about yesterday’s challenge, for the two printed graphic novels I choose from a fairly new ground to me, Manga, right now I am trying to complete Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, the Spanish language edition, which are about 30 numbers, and I have 8 of them.

I read numbers 2 and 3, in which Guts, the knight with the gargantuan sword, fights forces from another plain, and some of his mysterious pass unravels, so far I am loving it, but fair warning, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Thanks this two great volumes, and a whole lot of reading from Reaper’s Gale, I could complete the other two tasks, read for 4 hours ,and read 500 total pages.

For today the wheel has in store the three remaining tasks.

  1. Read for 6 hours
  2. Finish the current book (about 42 pages left)
  3. Start a new book ( Robin Hobb’s Assassin series)

The day is set, and the perfect way to finish this very successful week.

For now, I am off to read

Sixth day of “Seven days of reading “

Another great day of reading under my belt, yesterday I completed 2 out of the 3 tasks.

The one left for today was reading 200 pages from one book, right now I am about halfway there.

Reading after midnight was a breeze, this is because I combined it with large amounts of caffeine, two birds , one stone if you will.

  1. Read 50 pages outside
  2. Read 2 printed graphic novels
  3. Read 3 single issue comic books
  4. Read 300 total pages
  5. Read 1 digital graphic novel
  6. Read 2 digital graphic novels
  7. Read 50 pages in bed
  8. Read for 2 hours
  9. Read 300 total pages
  10. Read 100 pages on 1 room
  11. Read 50 pages while drinking red wine
  12. Read 300 total pages
  13. Read 50 pages while drinking coffee
  14. Read 50 pages after midnight
  15. Read 200 pages from one book

In between the day long reading session of Reaper’s Gale I managed to squeeze in a couple of graphic novels.

The newest stop on the crime fighting tour of Hit-Girl, Hong Kong, this time around she faces a foe hidden in the shadows, who might prove to much for this killing machine.

The second one is the first volume of the short lived Star Wars series, Agent of the Empire, it follows the adventures of Imperial spy Jahan Cross.

Now let’s see what the wheel has in store for me today.

  1. Read 2 printed graphic novels
  2. Read for 4 hours
  3. Read 500 total pages

A challenging day ahead of me, but I am more than ready .

For now I am off to read.

Fifth day of “Seven days of reading “

Hope everyone had a merry and safe holidays, mine was filled with turkey and chocolate cake, and of course lots of reading.

Again I was fortunate enough to complete all three tasks for yesterday, and now I am 12 of 12.

  1. Read 50 pages outside
  2. Read 2 printed graphic novels
  3. Read 3 single issue comic books
  4. Read 300 total pages
  5. Read 1 digital graphic novel
  6. Read 2 digital graphic novels
  7. Read 50 pages in bed
  8. Read for 2 hours
  9. Read 300 total pages
  10. Read 100 pages on 1 room
  11. Read 50 pages while drinking red wine
  12. Read 300 total pages

For the first and second task, read 100 pages on 1 room, and read 50 pages while drinking red wine, I opted to stay in bed while dinner was cooking on the oven.

And to get me over the 300 total pages, which again I barely got there with 304 pages, there were two amazing graphic novel.

Starting with th DC universe villains wrecking havoc all over the multiverse in Year of the Villain : Hell Arisen, we got to see Perpetua and The Batman who Laughs facing off.

The second graphic novel was Frank Miller’s futuristic noir story, Hardboiled, which follows an insurance adjuster, and along the ride are to legends in their own accord illustrator Geof Darrow, and colorist Dave Stewart, a gorey sci-fi ride with amazing detailed art.

Now let’s see what the wheel has in store for me.

  1. Read 50 pages while drinking coffee (better known as every single day)
  2. Read 50 pages after midnight (here is where the coffee comes in handy)
  3. Read 200 pages from one book

I will be focusing on Reaper’s Gale, and fortunately by the end of this week of reading, I’ll will finish it.

For now, I am off to read.
