Welcome to the third Magic Monday of the year, well almost on a Monday but the thought is what counts, and let me tell you that things are starting to roll quite beautifully.

My total for the week was an amazing 1,523 pages, that’s 22% more than the week’s quota, this week´s plan is to pick up the two books, the second volume of Gotrek and Felix´s Adventures and The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy, that I was reading before my Christmas reading marathon involving a trilogy of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher and the first 5 volumes of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I finally finished over the weekend. In addition to this, I have picked up a new Manga series, Fairy Tail by Hiro Mashima, currently, on volume number 3, and with 52 titles available thru my Kindle Unlimited subscription, there are a lot of stories to go thru.

My goal is to read more Manga series, right now there are a few on my radar like DR. Stone, Claymore, Noragami: Stray God, and Battle Angel Alita, but any recommendations are welcome, I’m kind of new to the genre, and it has hooked me.

Now let’s talk about MY NUMBERS, the current total is 31,225 of the 64,952 pages of this year’s goal, that’s 1,355 pages of progress since last Monday, with this, I’m 923 pages away from making this year enter my top 5 of the best page total. Still, there’s the 3,000-plus week that eludes me, one of the goals for year number fifteen is to have at least one, and finally have the first sigil tattooed on my body.

My reading schedule, the Achilles heel of the whole shebang, is 49 days behind, staying the same as last week, at least I didn’t lose ground, which for me is a victory in itself. My current projections put my total at 51,019 pages that are 13,923 pages less than what I’m comfortable with. The mantra for every morning will continue to be: one step at a time, one page at a time.

I start week thirty-three with a more manageable deficit of 7,340 pages, giving me quite the challenge to balance out this gargantuan number in each of the 19 weeks left on this year of reading. That number for this week is 534 additional pages to the 1,246 pages of the weekly quota.

For the first 500,000 pages, I have only 52,399 pages left, and the new date of reaching that goal is September 17,2024 that’s around 10 days earlier than the last projection, my sights are still pointed at March 20, 2023, as the desired date to reach the first half of the challenge, now I have 64 days to do so, but according to my current projection, the reality is that I’m 610 days behind schedule.

For the second part of the journey or the other 500,000 pages, my weekly pages needed are now 1,426 with a daily average of 204 pages, one daily page less than the last projection.

Now for the golden prize of 1,000,000 pages, to my delight, the projections put it 6,435 days away, a 56-day gain from the last projection, making the end date August 29, 2040, that’s 3,363 days after the original plan, 29 days less than the last projection. I have to keep reminding myself that my goal is to reach my goal by my 50th birthday, right now, I would be 59 years 2 months, and 24 days old.

To summarize the numbers from my Journey Back.

  • Pages to reach 500,000: 52,399 pages
  • Days to reach 1,000,000: 6,435 days
  • Days behind schedule: 3,363 days

Today’s Target

In order to reach the ultimate goal of this project, one word should be the main axis of each and every day, Consistency.

Fortunately, and with the help of the Readmore app, this first month of 2023 has been showing some signs of what my reading is supposed to be.

Thanks to one of the feature of the app, I can set daily targets not only for the total pages for day, but also for each individual book, this gives clear daily goals in order to meet my self imposed deadline

For today’s reading, these are my goals.

The daily goal will always be the main focus, those 180 pages are the minimum required to crossed the 1,000,000 pages threshold by my 50th birthday.

Shared adventures

There’s so new plans brewing for me share my experience thru reading 1,000,000 pages, and I’m glad to say, that this journey wouldn’t be made alone.

I’ll keep some of the details shrouded in mystery, but what I can say is that my friend from loqueleemos.com has joined me in what we are calling “joint readings”

Our first task is to go thru the first four Omnibus editions of the famous Warhammer Fantasy heroes Gotrek and Felix, this unlikely pair of the Dwarf killing machine and his human poet and sometimes warrior companion is sure has been a delightful read.

Right now, we are about 1/3 done with the second volume, and brewing some ideas to take you along on this amazing journey.

We’ll keep you posted.

Down memory lane

This passed few days I have been reading some new comic book from one of my most beloved characters from my childhood, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This particular collection is a fifteen volume series published by IDW Publishing and collects all the On-going series plus the special events and micro-series, this particular run is the longest in franchise history, to the moment there are 269 issues published.

The best part for me, has been enjoying the art work by co-creator Kevin Eastman, it really brings me back to when I discovered that the original source material for the Saturday cartoons was far cooler and darker.

Right now, I’m halfway thru the fourth volume, and judging by the storyline so far, this is just getting started. For what I heard, The Last Ronin story-arc is mind blowing.

8-days of “Readmass”, Day One

Yesterday; I started my Holiday Reading Marathon, a bit slow, but non the less it started with the great hope of going thru some amazing material, and hopefully by the end, I’ll read close to 4,000 pages.

This year’s list is comprised of some books and graphic novels that have been on my radar, and many of them that were just sitting on my shelves for far too long. The main task is to read 3 books of the Witcher Series, written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, for which I have only heard amazing things. I’m not familiar with the video game series, but my first voyage to this universe was the Netflix main series starring Henry Cavill, but as we all know, books are always a different animal.

The three books contained in this box set are Blood Elves, The Time of Contempt, and Baptism of Fire. I’m not really sure of the chronology of the story, but to my very limited knowledge of the matter, this is the first novel written, and there are a couple of books containing some short stories that go thru the shaping of the enigmatic Geralt of Rivia.

But the book that kicked off the festivities was the second volume of Kat Howard’s Book of Magic starring Tim Hunter, the kid wizard created by Neil Gaiman, and a dweller of the evergrowing Sandman Universe. The Next graphic on the queue is the third volume of the same series.

Here’s my complete list of reading, the ones crossed are the ones that I have already gone thru.

  • Blood of Elves
  • The Time of Contempt
  • Baptism of Fire
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: IDW Collection Vol. 3
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: IDW Collection Vol. 4
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: IDW Collection Vol. 5
  • Books of Magic (2018-) Vol.2
  • Books of Magic (2018-) Vol.3
  • The Dreaming (2018-) Vol.2
  • The Dreaming (2018-) Vol.3
  • Attack on Titan Vol.5
  • Attack on Titan Vol.6
  • Attack on Titan Vol.7
  • DC/Young Animal: Milk Wars
  • Knights of Sidonia Vol. 1

I wish each and every one a happy holiday season, filled with love and lots of food.

A reading marathon before a reading marathon

It been quite sometime since I posted any updates from my reading journey, hectic is the word for the closing months of this year.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, and the 10,000 plus pages that I have fallen behind on my reading, the natural decision to have an intense reading marathon is not only a great way to spent this lazy cold days but also a necessity to start the second half of my year of reading closer to my goal.

Thus, on December 23, starts my “8 days of readmass” marathon. But in order to read what I have in mind, which includes 3 books of The Witcher series, a great chunk of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collections, and some Mangas that I have being putting off, I must first finish the two current books that are in my “currently reading” pile.

With both over 1,000 pages each, in order to have my proper marathon, I must have a warm-up run. The task for the upcoming days, with the help of the Readmore app, is to hit the daily total to finish by the start of the main event.

The two books in question are the Second Omnibus of Gotrek and Felix adventures, set the the vast Warhammer Fantasy Universe, which will only get bigger with Henry Cavill’s plan to develop with Amazon Studios a bunch of series and movies. The other book us the classic Border Trilogy by genius author Cormac McCarthy, set in the borderland of Texas and México, with the raw beauty of the desert landscape perfectly captured by enthralling writing of Mr. McCarthy.

So, the task for today goes like this

157 pages for Gotrek and Felix, and 129 pages for The Border Trilogy. I have already read a few pages, but not quite up to the needed task.

Let’s see how the day progress.

More crawling, less walking

My recent progress with this year’s reading can be more accurately described as crawling more so than taking those little steps I so desperately need.

This week started with some pretty intimidating red numbers, 9,525 to be precise. Not a big shocker if your week finishes with a total of 412 of the 1,246 projected for each week.

But I’m not panicking, not yet, because even with the gargantuan task ahead of me, there’s still a little over 6 months to hit the mark.

The focus for the week will be twofold. Firstly, and as obvious as it may sound, read at least the 1,246 projected. Secondly, reach the number for these week’s “little steps”, roughly, a total of 1,642 pages for the week.

If everything goes well, there’s a big possibility that my “Magic Mondays” updates make a triumphant return. But for that to happen, I must go and recapture the missing magic.

A, more or less triumphant, return

It has been more than a month since my last post, and things have been progressing not quite the way that I would have liked. Don’t misinterpret me, there´s has been some amazing days for my page count, but in all, my goal at this point of the game is still far into the horizon.

Let’s begin with the thing that concerns me the most, the 46 days that my reading schedule has fallen behind. By now I should be nearing 29,000 total pages for year 15. Although 20,181 it’s not a bad total if this pace is maintained, by the end of the year I’ll be looking at 47,046 total pages, again, not a bad result, but around 17,000 pages less than my projections.

The other spectrum that gives me a headache is the finish dates for the first 500,000 and consequently the full scope one this project’s namesake, the elusive 1,000,000 pages. Right now, my date for reaching the first monumental milestone is November 29, 2024, a full 19 months later than my original plan of reaching it by March 2023.

The whole enchilada is even more behind, 114 months to be precise. I’m looking to cross the finish line by November 2041, a full 9 years 7 months, and 16 days after my 50th birthday. But if these challenges didn’t present themselves, well, the whole spice of the thing would go out the door.

My focus is now pinpointed on taking little steps toward the bigger picture, to start, and hopefully, I found the one app to help me along the way, is to reach each and every day my minimal average, which is 178 pages, so far, at least for the month of November, this has been the case of 4 of the 12 days. The positive side of things is that my total is 1,615 pages and 11 hours and 23 minutes logged.

The images you see above are from the reading tracking app “Read More“, which has a very simple but effective interface that allows you to keep track without having to put a lot of time into updates, time that could be spent reading.

To close out this week of reading, my focus is to reach the total projected for the week, just 630 pages left, and hopefully add on around 242 pages which represent my “little steps” toward the bigger goal.

It’s good to be back.

P.S.

I didn’t not mention it ,but my grand total is currently at 436,557 pages, let´s go get those 63,443 pages
