That’s how you bounce back

I start this Sunday morning reading, the last day of week number 3 of the new year of reading , with a great sense of delight from how this week is about to close.

First, the side challenge, 52 books in 52 weeks, is now officially back on track, I finished the third volume of the Saga Seven Suns late last night, and I am more that eager to jump into the fourth book, Scattered Suns.

Kevin J. Anderson doesn’t let up in the third volume, there’s an endless stream of new elements and intrigues that keep pushing the story forward, and as with the ancient Klikiss ruins, every time someone turns a dusty corner there’s new player in the board trying to gain some kind of advantage, such an amazing universe.

The second things I have been working on this week is trying to get back on my reading schedule concerning the total pages for each week, last week result was underwhelming to say the least.

This week wasn’t the case, I already cover this week quota of 1,246 pages, the last three day have been and almost perpetual reading session with totals of 335, 202, and 455 pages.

I am aiming for my first 500-page day, and with this week’s weather forecast, the next 5 days of thunderstorms and isolated showers, it will seem that the perfect reading weather is upon me.

Let’s see how much of the 907 pages accumulated from the past two weeks I can chip away.

Numbers: June 25, 2021

I am at the tail end of the third week of this new year of reading, time thus fly when you’re having fun, and it is starting to gain forward momentum, I had a few rocky moments in week number two but apparently that’s behind me now, so testify the 300-page day from yesterday.

Now let me update the overall progress of the year, and more importantly where do I stand on the broader picture.

My current total is 2,454 of the 64,952 pages of this year’s goal, with more than 340 days left on this year, things are shaping up pretty good, I say good and not fantastic because the current projection for the total at the end of the year sits at 44,818 pages, a bit of work left to reach the almost 65,000 pages for the year, but the tendency is going on the right track.

My reading schedule it’s a little behind , 4 days to be precise, but with the current results of yesterday and how today is shaping up, and the fact that the challenge of reading one book per each week of the reading is right on the money, close in on the final quarter of Horizon Storms, I think the gap will close fairly quickly,

Starting next Monday, I will start posting each week progress, and finally comparing how things are gaining ground slowly but surely.

Now let’s talk about the broader picture, my numbers show the kind of momentum I expect to see each and every week moving forward, as times dwindles down to a tighter schedule this is of the utmost importance in order to reach the golden prize.

On what concerns my first 500,000 pages, I have only 146,969 pages left, and the new date of reaching that goal is October 3, 2026, that’s 48 days sooner than the last time I check, still my sights are pointed at March 20, 2023 as the desired date to reach the first half of the challenge, this is thinking of having at least 3,000 days to read the other half.

And speaking of the golden prize of 1,000,000 pages, to my delight the projections puts it 8,479 days away, a 59 day gain from the last time I checked, making the end date is September 11, 2044, that’s 4,847 days after the original plan, 41 days less that the last projection, this kind of boost inject much needed energy to tackle on the next challenges.

To summary the numbers from my Journey Back, here are the numbers that officially kick-off the new year of reading:

  • Pages to reach 500,000: 146,969 pages
  • Days to reach 1,000,000: 8,479 days
  • Days behind schedule: 4,847 days

This numbers keep me motivated to try my best each and every week, and now that reaching the 1,000,000-page mark has an added bonus, well, that just sends my focus thru the roof. You may ask what’s that prize at the end of the road, I can only answer that in due time I’ll extensively share with you me plans.

2 down, 50 to go

After a bit of a rough patch, I am glad to announce that the second book of the year os complete, I know almost 2 days after but better late that never.

Now it’s just a matter of playing catch-up, and trying to balance out as soon as possible my reading schedule, for me at the end of the day, come June 6 of next year, my list must have 52 finished books and more than 65,000 total pages.

Now my focus is to read a good chunk of the third volume of the Saga of the Seven Suns, Horizon Storms, the last book just broaden the scope of the cultures involved in this epic among the stars, all of this entwined with some really ancient, deep and dark political secrets that threaten the very existence of the universe.

Not to spoil anything but I do hope to see more of the ancient story of the vanished Klikiss civilization, and its involvement with the new players that appear on the already tumultuous scene.

Just as a side note, my total for this week is currently at 141 pages, just 2,082 more to balance out this year, and for this upcoming Friday, I plan to do the first report of how things are shaping up on the broader picture.

The 100 page dilemma

Inspite my best efforts, and an intense reading session yesterday, I still have 100 page to go on last week’s book, A Forest of Stars.

Entering this way the third week of this new year of reading is not what I was hoping for, but as I always say, what is life without a little challenge.

This will be a pivotal week to keep things on track, the goal, let me tell you will not be easy, is to finish reading A Forest of Stars, hopefully by tonight, and start the third book of the Saga of the Seven Suns, Horizon Storms, this marks the switch to the digital versions of the series, and probably that’ll help me on the long run, the portability of the kindle helps to increase my reading sessions.

Finishing those two books in this week will cover only half of the weeks goals, now for the trickier part, reaching the total projected at the end of this week, around 3,700 registered pages.

That gives me little over 2,200 pages to read, with things rapidly precipitating towards that coveted summer vacation period, I am certain this will be a success.

The seemingly impossible task

I have fallen so behind my reading is not even funny.

Right now I stand on a crossroad, not the one I would have like to be on a Saturday night, but I’ll make it work.

So what decision I have to make, it’s simple, aim to reach this week’s total page goal, or finish the second book of the year.

I think the answer is simple, finish the book, I think is easier to bounce back from a low page week, in the other hand if I don’t finish the book by tomorrow, the 52in52 project just goes out the window.

So the task is simple, read 297 is the next 27 hours, keep the streak alive, worry about sleeping at another time.

Let’s see how this night plays out.

First 300-page day

I started this week with a really slow pace, just 61 pages on the first two days, but yesterday changed that.

My total was a whopping 379 pages, making it the first one of the year, and a much needed breath of fresh air.

My strategy to get out of reading slumps is easy, comic-books. They are faster to read, and help you get some momentum going.

There was a small pile of Star Wars comic books, left from my readathon back on May, just sitting there, eager to be read.

I must say the Charles Soule’s run of Darth Vader is simply amazing, it surpassed my expectations by light years.

Today my plan is to get back on track with this week’s book, A Forest of Stars, I am painfully behind schedule.

Numbers: June 14,2021

The first week of this new year it’s officially done, that nervous energy it has been transformed into purpose.

Now, I almost hit both weekly goals, the first, read 1,246 pages,my total was 1,039 pages, just 207 pages shy of it, these are going to be distributed along the seven days of this new week.

The second goal, I hit it out of the park, finish the first book of the year, Hidden Empire, the first volume of the Saga of the Seven Suns, an amazing beginning to this science fiction saga.

For this week, as it will be for the next 50 weeks of this year of reading, I have two very specific goals, read this week’s book, the second volume of the Saga of Seven Suns, A Forest of Stars.

And secondly, I must read this week’s page quota, plus what was left over from last week, that will give 1,453 pages for this week.

Concerning the broader picture of my progress toward those mythical 1,000,000 pages, my next update will be on June 25, this with some pictures of my new beautiful black paged bullet journal.

Just about

I am about to close out the first week of this new year of reading, and it is of grave importance that this will set the tone for the remaining 51 weeks.

As the title states, I am just about to achieve this, on the total page count I just reach 1,000 net pages, that leaves 246 to read, and the entirety of this scorching hot Sunday.

As with the first book of the year, Hidden Empire, I have only 28 pages left to go. I am really confident that the first of 52 weeks of books will be checked off with some running room left to jump into the second book of Saga of the Seven Suns, A Forest of Stars.

Rushing

As the long standing tradition at the beginning of my reading year dictates, I have fallen behind my schedule, in both my total pages and this week’s book.

Nothing completely catastrophic, but none the less I’m rushing to rectify the situation.

For the upcoming years, being the total for each one so challenging , I have decided to focus on getting the total for each week done by Sunday night, if I don’t do this it starts snow balling and what little control I have goes out the window.

To start this year my daily total must be 178 pages, that would mean that each week I should finish with 1,246 pages by the end of each Sunday, and every 10 weeks, I recalculate my total for each day and adjust accordingly, hopefully it will start to go down.

Getting back to me falling behind, right now I am 205 pages behind schedule for my weekly total, and 30 pages for this weeks book.

So the first thing is to brew some coffee, chip away those 30 pages of the book, it won’t be hard because Hidden Empire has been fucking amazing, and try to squeeze in some pages from the first volume of DC comics 52.

52 in 52, the second attempt

With this new and blossoming year comes the idea to try and tackle a task that has eluded me in the past, to read a book for each of the 52 weeks of my reading year.

So, what better time than the present, although I don’t have the full list of reading for this year, and let’s remember it’s focused on Science Fiction books, I can at least put down the first 11 books in reading order.

  1. Hidden Empire ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  2. A Forest of Stars ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  3. Horizons Storms ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  4. Scattered Suns ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  5. Of Fire and Night ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  6. Metal Swarm ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  7. The Ashes of Worlds ( Kevin J. Anderson)
  8. Exhalación (Ted Chiang)
  9. The Fifth Season ( N.K. Jemisin)
  10. The Obelisk Gate   ( N.K. Jemisin)
  11. The Stone Sky   ( N.K. Jemisin)

Any recommendations will be more than welcome, for now I’ll keep on working on the 63 daily pages to finish The Hidden Empire by Sunday.
