The final stretch

Today is the deadline for my spring vacation break reading goal.

As you can remember, the goal was to finish three books I was reading, from which I have already finish A Tolkien Miscellany and Anerican Gods, the third one, Dust of Dreams, is showing some resistence.

Currently I am on page 568 of 816, that means 247 pages left to read, and according to the calculation of my Kindle, there’s a little under 10 hours left of reading.

It’s quite the task, I think I’ll just jump into it, armed with good lighting, snacks, and caffeine. Hopefully I’ll come out the other side victorious.

As always I’ll throw into the mix some time to read graphic novels, just finish the amazing work by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, The Wake, the artwork remains me so much to the work of the legendary Mike Mignola, just feel in love with it.

To continue with the great imagination of Mr. Snyder ,in collaboration with Kyle Higgins, next up is the mini series Batman: Gates of Gotham, expanding on the first day of Gotham City.

Off to read.

13 hours 1 minute

As I approached this evening’s reading session there is a significant amount of pages between me, and my goal of finishing Dust of Dreams before Wednesday morning.

Currently, I am on page 474 of 816, a little over halfway through, for tonight’s reading my target page is 557, leaving 259 for Tuesday and the early morning of Wednesday, quite the gargantuan task, but fairly doable.

Two down, one to go

I just finished reading American Gods, and although it’s the fifth time, I always enjoy it a lot, and for the first time it was a Spanish version of the book.

It is actually the book I planned to read to reach the 1,000,000, as one of my rules dictates, I can read a book any number of times, as long as the edition is different.

For that very special occasion, I will read the first paperback edition that I bought and read in 2003, way before this project started in 2008.

Now there is only one book left to reach my designated challenge for the spring vacation break, Dust of Dreams.

I have 416 left, the rest of this lazy Sunday, and both Monday and Tuesday to reach that goal.

Off to read.

Halfway there

After a couple of great reading sessions, I have finally reached the halfway point of my latest mini goal, to finish reading my three current books.

As I posted on earlier entries, I still have two books left, Dust of Dreams, currently on page 305 of 816, and American Gods, currently on page 452 of 558.

That leaves me with 617 combined pages, and 4 days to do it.

After this task is completed, I decided to jump right into The Crippled God, the final volume of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and thus finish one of the main focus of this year of reading.

I’ll close out the night with a couple of chapters from Dust of Dreams, and start the weekend with under 550 pages left.

Off to read.

Numbers: April 2, 2021

I was dreading going thru my digital files, this is of course because my reading has been good, and not spectacular, I’m in desperate need of the latter.

Let’s start with the total number of this thirteen year of reading.

My current total is 15, 658 of the 37, 984 pages of this year’s goal, and with 66 days left, it will see more far fetched to hit the mark, right now I am 76 days behind my reading schedule.

With some intense reading I’ll probably sum-up around 21,000 pages, not a bad year.

Still, this year’s main focus will be to finish with the epic fantasy series The Malazan Book of the Fallen, currently on the ninth volume well underway, and the tenth just eager to jump off the shelf.

On the broader picture things are starting to get back to normal, the last few weeks I saw some concerning signs of going backwards, situations which is now well under control.

According to my calculations, I’ll will be reaching my first 500,000 pages, there are still 158,794 pages to read, on January 25, 2027, there’s still a lot of work to do in order to meet the first projected date of March 20, 2023, this gives me my first focus for the upcoming years.

In the mater of the 1,000,000 pages, I’m 8,810 away from this, my ultimate goal, that will mean that the end date would be May 16, 2045, a whopping 5,094 days after the original plan to finish by my 50th birthday, keeping this pace I would finish by the time to almost celebrate my 64th birthday, which it will simply not do.

This is my second focus, or as I put it, the Journey Back, all of my effort will be pour into it.

In order keep track of this, I’ll be posting weekly how my numbers fluctuate, with that in mind, here there are:

  • Pages to reach 500,000: 158,794 pages
  • Days to reach 1,000,000: 8,810 days
  • Days behind schedule: 5,094 days

I’ll be keeping this same format thru-out the upcoming posts to better share my progress.

Starting this upcoming June, I’ll be officially entering the last decade of this particular project, I have been keeping track how many pages I would need to read on a daily and yearly basis in order to reach my coveted goal, as with my numbers above, I’m going to keep track up until the beginning of year number fourteen, and making the necessary adjustments to hit the 1,000,000-page mark, for now they stand like so :

  • Pages needed/year: 65,880
  • Pages needed/day: 180

Lots of things have been set into motion, time to execute them.

The collection is finally complete

After a few years on searching, and of course saving for these beauties don’t come cheap, I finally tracked down the two remaining volumes of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, in its Absolute Edition, a leather bound book inside a slipcase with this legendary reprinted and enhanced.

The first four volumes and The Absolute Death have been on my book shelves for quite a while, I bought them between 2006 and 2009 when they were originally published.

For the last 8 months, I have been searching for volume 5, originally published on November 2011, and the last volume, Sandman: Overture, originally published on July 2018, and finally hit the jackpot with Volume 5, and a couple of months later with Overture.

Here are some pictures to exemplify why I love this edition so much.

Volume 5 contains the story Dream Hunters, illustrated by the legendary Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano, and the art for Overture is by one of my favourite illustrators, J.H. Williams III.

I am more than happy to have this beauties on my shelf, this means some reading sessions with a good glass of wine, and the Dream Lord guiding my footsteps

On the right track

This past few days have been progressing quite nicely.

I’m currently working on two books, Dust of Dreams, on page 248 of 816, and American Gods, on page 385 of 558.

The plan remains the same, finish both of them by next Wednesday, that leaves me with 741 pages left to read, I started with 1,271 pages, this means that the halfway point is within reach, just some measly 106 pages , I’ll try to reach during this evening’s reading.

My focus will be Dust of Dreams, this latter chapters of The Malazan Book of the Fallen have proven to be really encompassing, and full of depth, and to not miss any subtleties demands a slower more focused approach to reading.

I think a couple of chapters will do the trick, and will send to the Dreaming quite satisfied.

One down, two to go

I just finished the first , A Tolkien Miscellany, of the three books I set out to finish over my spring vacation break.

I still have two books and 951 pages ahead of me, 8 days of intensive reading in order to achieve this mini goal. To close out the night, I’ll try to make some headway with Dust of Dreams, currently on page 175 of 816.

Tomorrow it will be fully devoted to American Gods, currently on page 258 of 558, I have catch a good rhythm, and combining it with some comic books I can hit the over 150 pages mark for the fourth consecutive day.

On April 2, I’ll be posting how my numbers for this year had been progressing, my intention is to post every Friday about how the main progress of my journey to read 1,000,000 pages is shaping up.

This will include some projection of my finishing date, and the strategy for closing the gap, and getting up to speed with my long term goals.

One page at a time

I had a bit of progress with the three books I’m currently reading. Right now I have read 166 pages of the 1,271 left.

Today my focus will be the epic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the translation famously worked by professor Tolkien, and contained in the book I started reading back on Tolkien Reading Day.

In the afternoon I’ll probably squeeze in a couple of chapters from American Gods, I’m currently on the second part, My Ainsel, which contain some of my favorite parts of the book.

And to close out the day, try to make some headway with Dust of Dreams, the most challenging read of the three.

My plan is still finish by April 7, that gives me 9 days, and after that see which path to take, finish off my journey thru Genabackis, or, go back to the mesmerizing world created by Robin Hobb.

So many possibilities, So little time.
