Numbers: May 7,2021

My three-week long Star Wars reading marathon is in full swing, and its paying off with some amazing dividets, more than 800 pages in only 3 days, last week I didn’t update, because there was nothing to update.

That being said let me update you on my progress for these two weeks of reading.

My current total is 19,672 of the 37, 984 pages of this year’s goal, and with 31 days left on this year of reading the main goal is to have the best possible starting point for the upcoming years,

In not so good news,once again I have fallen even more behind my reading schedule, it went from 82 to 86 days , hopefully this reading surge will help me gain a bit of room to finish strong.

The projections for total pages for the year sits at 22,604, that’s a 302 improvement from last week, this type of positive numbers are great motivators to take the final weeks and finish at least 1,000 pages over that projection.

On the broader picture, my numbers show some signs of life, I keep chipping away days and pages to read.

This is most evident on the dates for reaching my first 500,000 pages, the pages to read are now 154,784, that’s 1,778 from the last update, and the new date is December 19, 2026, a 19 day gain from two weeks ago, I have finally enter year 2026, a step closer to the original end date of March 20, 2023, every day counts.

Now for the golden prize of 1,000,000 pages, to my delight the projections puts it 8,721 days away, a 33 day gain from two weeks ago, which would mean that the end date is March 23, 2045, and 5,040 days after the original plan, 20 days less.

To summary the numbers from my Journey Back, here are this week’s final numbers:

  • Pages to reach 500,000: 154,785 pages (1,476 pages less than two weeks ago)
  • Days to reach 1,000,000: 8,721 days (33 days less than two weeks ago)
  • Days behind schedule: 5,040 days (20 days less than two weeks ago)

What concerns the next decade of reading, this week’s adjustment show a bit of improvement on both my yearly and daily average, they finish like this:

  • Pages needed/year: 65,470 (147 pages less than two weeks ago)
  • Pages needed/day: 179 (1 less than two weeks ago)

I’ll continue with reading some great adventures from one of my favorite universes, and hopefully next week will be as productive as this one

The force is still with me

I am entering the fourth day of my three week long Star Wars reading marathon, and if I can keep up the current pace it will be really productive.

Right now, I have read a total of 831 pages, this includes two amazing graphic novels, The Old Republic: Threat of Peace, and Star Wars-Omnibus: Emissaries & Assassins, this last volume has some adventures of Jedi Master Ki-Adi Mundi in Tatooine , where he encounters a Jedi of the ferocious Tusken Raiders.

I also made some good progress with Star Wars: Revan, currently on page 263 which is almost the halfway point, it is really fast paced adventure into the uncertain lost memories of a really powerful Sith Lord who fought his way into redemption.

I’ll try to finish by Tuesday, my plan is to read one book each week of the readathon, I’ll be looking into my TBR pile to seek my next adventure.

May the fourth be with you

Happy Star Wars day!!!

Today marks the start of a three week long Star Wars marathon, this would be the second year I celebrate one of my favorite universes in such manner.

Has you would imagine, and as with pretty much everything else involving the goals of this project, the main idea is to read as much Star Wars material possible.

I’ll start with two stories that are no longer canon, and are set in the Old Republic, that’s about 4,000 years before Episode IV.

I’ll update my total numbers on Friday, and hopefully this reading marathon will be a boost to finish the year strongly.

The end of the journey

And thus, one of the best and hardest series I have ever read, comes to an epic close.

Not to spoil anything, but the appearance of the menacing Crippled God, and all the backdoor treachery was just the perfect way to close out this fantasy masterpiece.

I still have plenty of other stories to read involving this amazing universe, some series written by Steven Erikson that I am hunting down, and The Malazan Empire series written by Ian Cameron Esslemont, which I purchased on my Kindle a while ago.

It was quite the journey, that started on October 14,2018 and finished about an hour ago, making it 932 days between book one, Gardens of Moon, and book ten, The Crippled God.

I started using the Bookly app to keep track, and I have really specific data from starting book three, Memories of Ice, unfortunately from the first two volumes I only have total pages read, but the break down goes like this.

  1. Gardens of the Moon (635 pages)
  2. Deadhouse Gates (699 pages)
  3. Memories of Ice (925 pages) (24 hours 58 minutes)
  4. House of Chains (1021 pages) (23 hours 41 minutes)
  5. Midnight Tides (624 pages) (20 hours 46 minutes)
  6. The Bonehunters (804 pages) (24 hours 7 minutes)
  7. Reaper’s Gale (1003 pages) (18 hours 55 minutes)
  8. Toll the Hounds (1269 pages) (22 hours 36 minutes)
  9. Dust of Dreams (816 pages) (12 hours 57 minutes)
  10. The Crippled God (913 pages) (25 hours 23 minutes)

This gives me a total of 8,709 pages and a reading time, from book three to ten, of 173 hours and minutes.

I will highly recommend that you read this series, a real must for any fantasy lover, after reading less intrinsic series, I have been reading fantasy for more than 20 years, and this is a vast cast of characters, races, locations, magical systems ( the warrens are my favorite part of the stories), gods, kingdoms, and all around customs, that it can easily become to much if you’re not accustom to this type of stories.

Just to close out this amazing experience, I would like to say that my favorite volume was number two, the whe sequence in Raraku, the holy desert, was just amazing, and it reverberated with me quite personally, living in a desert you can appreciate the sheer vastness and beauty of a place like that, and Mr. Erikson captured it exquisitely.

Now, to begin new journeys.

Into the night

As I check my progress with the last of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and with my deadline being today, my night has just become more interesting.

As you can see in the image above, taken from the Bookly app, I still have 148 pages left,and with my pace of reading, this will take 4 hours and 13 minutes to read.

Off to read, caffeine don’t fail me now.

Into the final stretch

I have really determined to finish reading The Crippled God by tomorrow night, firstly because I can put it down, and I’ll like to use this weekend to read another book before the start of my almost month long Star Wars marathon.

I am currently on page 699 of 908, with everything pointing in the direction of an intense late night reading session.

The aim for this night is to reach at least page 782, which is the beginning of Chapter 24, the final of the series, before the two epilogue that close out the book.

365 pages in 7 days

I am fast approaching the start of my 3 week long Star Wars reading marathon, and only one thing stands in my way, the final volume of The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

I’m currently on page 543, that means that I have 365 pages left to read in a week, that’s roughly 54 pages per day, for today I have already logged 9 pages, and will keep on focusing on finish by the weekend so I can read one last book before immersing myself on a galaxy far, far away .

Speaking of which, here are some of the things I’ll be reading.

A bit of balance between canon and legend stuff, more pictures coming soon.

Final report from Bookly’s Spring Readathon

I am really satisfied with my results of my reading for the 4-day readathon.

To be honest, I was on the fence to whether to participate or not, but as it turns out, it was a great motivator.

The best part is that it got me on pace to finish The Crippled God, currently on page 523, and getting me back in form for my month-long Star Wars readathon.

Bookly’s Spring Readathon, update two

I did it!!!

10 hours of reading.

Yesterday was a really productive day, I read for 5 hours and 5 minutes with a total of 316 pages.

My greatest satisfaction is that I made excellent progress with The Crippled God, read from page 361 to 485, that’s 124 pages, and way over the halfway point of the book, and 9 days to my deadline, I am more than confident to finish in time.

Let’s see total how many more pages and hours I can sum-up on this lazy, wine drinking spring Sunday.

Bookly’s Spring Readathon, first update

I am exactly where I wanted to be on my progress starting the third day of this boosting readathon, right in the middle of the 10-hour goal.

The first day, April 22, was fantastic, with a total of 3 hours and 3 minutes of reading, and 295 total pages. Yesterday, April 23 and World Book Day, which is kind of a busy day, I read for 2 hours and 1 minute for a total of 125 pages, a would have liked to have an all-out celebration to commemorate World Book Day, but you know life, but today I’ll try to replicate the excitement of one of my favorite days of the year.

I received from my lovely wife, as our tradition is for the day, a new book, La última sonrisa en Sunder City by Luke Arnold, published by the newly form Gamon Fantasy, a Spanish-based publishing house that is focusing on lesser known but still amazing fantasy books, this is the first addition to my shelves, and I am scrambling to get the others they have already printed.

Today’s focus will be to reach at least the 8 hours mark, and read as much as I can the final volume from the Malazan Book of the Fallen, The Crippled God, with some graphic novels in between, in particular the two volumes of DC Comics massive series 52, which came out quite a few years ago but I didn’t finish reading it, so I decided to read the whole thing.

Stay safe, over here, things are getting again a bit difficult, we are back to lock-down over the weekend, with new decisions concerning how to go forward on Monday, this is far from over.
