The end of the journey

And thus, one of the best and hardest series I have ever read, comes to an epic close.

Not to spoil anything, but the appearance of the menacing Crippled God, and all the backdoor treachery was just the perfect way to close out this fantasy masterpiece.

I still have plenty of other stories to read involving this amazing universe, some series written by Steven Erikson that I am hunting down, and The Malazan Empire series written by Ian Cameron Esslemont, which I purchased on my Kindle a while ago.

It was quite the journey, that started on October 14,2018 and finished about an hour ago, making it 932 days between book one, Gardens of Moon, and book ten, The Crippled God.

I started using the Bookly app to keep track, and I have really specific data from starting book three, Memories of Ice, unfortunately from the first two volumes I only have total pages read, but the break down goes like this.

  1. Gardens of the Moon (635 pages)
  2. Deadhouse Gates (699 pages)
  3. Memories of Ice (925 pages) (24 hours 58 minutes)
  4. House of Chains (1021 pages) (23 hours 41 minutes)
  5. Midnight Tides (624 pages) (20 hours 46 minutes)
  6. The Bonehunters (804 pages) (24 hours 7 minutes)
  7. Reaper’s Gale (1003 pages) (18 hours 55 minutes)
  8. Toll the Hounds (1269 pages) (22 hours 36 minutes)
  9. Dust of Dreams (816 pages) (12 hours 57 minutes)
  10. The Crippled God (913 pages) (25 hours 23 minutes)

This gives me a total of 8,709 pages and a reading time, from book three to ten, of 173 hours and minutes.

I will highly recommend that you read this series, a real must for any fantasy lover, after reading less intrinsic series, I have been reading fantasy for more than 20 years, and this is a vast cast of characters, races, locations, magical systems ( the warrens are my favorite part of the stories), gods, kingdoms, and all around customs, that it can easily become to much if you’re not accustom to this type of stories.

Just to close out this amazing experience, I would like to say that my favorite volume was number two, the whe sequence in Raraku, the holy desert, was just amazing, and it reverberated with me quite personally, living in a desert you can appreciate the sheer vastness and beauty of a place like that, and Mr. Erikson captured it exquisitely.

Now, to begin new journeys.

Into the night

As I check my progress with the last of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and with my deadline being today, my night has just become more interesting.

As you can see in the image above, taken from the Bookly app, I still have 148 pages left, and with my pace of reading, this will take 4 hours and 13 minutes to read.

Off to read, caffeine don’t fail me now.

Into the final stretch

I have really determined to finish reading The Crippled God by tomorrow night, firstly because I can put it down, and I’ll like to use this weekend to read another book before the start of my almost month long Star Wars marathon.

I am currently on page 699 of 908, with everything pointing in the direction of an intense late night reading session.

The aim for this night is to reach at least page 782, which is the beginning of Chapter 24, the final of the series, before the two epilogue that close out the book.

Off to read.

365 pages in 7 days

I am fast approaching the start of my 3 week long Star Wars reading marathon, and only one thing stands in my way, the final volume of The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

I’m currently on page 543, that means that I have 365 pages left to read in a week, that’s roughly 54 pages per day, for today I have already logged 9 pages, and will keep on focusing on finish by the weekend so I can read one last book before immersing myself on a galaxy far, far away .

Speaking of which, here are some of the things I’ll be reading.

A bit of balance between canon and legend stuff, more pictures coming soon.

Off to read.

Bookly Spring Readathon

With 45 days left on this year of reading, I can’t think of a better way to kick off this final leg than with a readathon.

The goal is simple, read for 10 hours from Thursday to Sunday, that’s from the April 22 to April 25, while keeping track on the app.

It seems easy enough but it can get tricky, let’s see how it plays out, I’ll probably post update are the end if each day.

On the reading, I will be focusing on The Crippled God, and some digital graphic novels that I have been meaning to read.

As always, this type of intense reading sessions fuel up my motivation to finish the year strongly, and carry the momentum for next year.

49 days

I am 49 days away from the end of my reading year, and consequently, my 40th birthday, and as tradition mandates, today I start preparing the notebook for logging next year’s reading.

I must say that this notebook is simply astonishing.

I bought it on the Notebook Therapy, a store that specializes in Japanese and Korean stationary, and it’s a special edition Bullet journal named Tsuki Midnight Edition, with the particularity that it has black pages, and comes with some really special vibrant pens that shine beautifully.

Right now I am working on the first pages that contain all of the basic information of the Notebook, like my reading list, days left, weeks, time periods, and so on, probably by tomorrow I’ll upload some examples of finished pages in all their black glory.

I’ll get back to chipping away at The Crippled God, currently on page 183, and try to sum up some more pages before this lazy Sunday ends.

As I said on previous posts, the 37,984-page goal is really far-fetched, but my intention is to get as close as possible.

Off to read.

Slowing down

Yesterday was a pretty slow day for my reading, only 15 total pages.

I finish on page 67 of The Crippled God, this of 908 , and with only 19 days left in the deadline, things can go south really fast.

But not to panic, I’ll just stick to my plan, read at least the minimal number of pages for each day, today’s total are 45, try to give a few extra, and make my priority to read each day what I need before even looking at another thing.

After hitting that daily mark, I’ll reward myself with, you guess it correctly, more reading, I have some really interesting digital graphic novels lined up to read.

Little steps for big goals

This week I am testing out some new ways to keep track of my goals and to see if it helps as extra motivation.

Right now I am focusing on tracking my progress thru the final two volumes of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, which I have finish volume 9 and working on volume 10.

The cool thing is that the app adjusts the total pages I have to read daily in order to reach the goal by the deadline.

For today I have 43 total pages to read, from which I have registered only 3, the screenshot is from the app Goal Tracker.

On another app, Goals, I’m trying it out to keep track of the bigger picture goals, like reaching the 500,000 and 1,000,000 pages, also, the total pages from each year, as you can see in the screenshot below.

So far they are working smoothly, let’s see on the long haul.

A positive shift

This last few days I have been seeing a really positive shift in my reading.

I think that my new routine is finally paying off, this include exercise at least 30 minutes every day, because after a year of confinement I was started feeling really anxious.

Now my daily routine includes tending to the garden, experimenting on the kitchen, and lots of reading.

I hope to finish this year over the 20,000-page mark, and recharged to take on the final decade of reading.

This is highly motivated when I come across amazing things in my reading, this is the case of the series written by James Tynion IV, Justice League Dark, which has quickly become one of my favorites.

Yesterday I read the third volume, containing The Witching War, which to my surprise feature The Floronic Man, a constant antagonist of Swamp Thing, this book is really fun to read because it takes some DC comics obscure characters into the spotlight.

Off to read, and to keep the good reading rythm going.

The last leg of the Malazan journey

I tried really hard last night to finish Dust of Dreams, buy my old nemesis sleep got the best of me.

But one of the perks of having young children is that getting up late is rarely an option.

So around 6:45 a.m. with a cup of black coffee the size of a medium bucket, I started the final pages of the ninth volume, and for the looks of it, if anyone was left alive from the shit-storm from the last chapter, it will close out with a bang.

To finish off this massive series, I found that it was only fitting to read the last book in printed form, this particular book ( see the picture below) has been eagerly awaiting in my Bookshelf for about 10 years, it’s time has finally come.

To accompany this start of the final chapter, I’ll read in between session some new material from the Dark Knight, the newest issues of Death Metal, and the now classic Grant Morrison series of Batman & Robin.
