(Y-10) 5th year anniversary on WordPress and the 2,000 pages

On this rainy desert morning, I received a notification from the good people of WordPress that today is the fifth anniversary of my blog.

What better way to celebrate, that reaching the second milestone of this tenth year of reading, 2000 pages.

This spike in my reading is mainly due to two things: I finished reading Star Wars: Aftermath, which gave me a total of 502 pages, as far as this novel goes I found all the things Star Wars should be, a little intrigue, lots of space battles and the wit of Han Solo.

The other thing was reading the first two volumes of Autumnlands.

Written by veteran comic-book creator Kurt Busiek and beautifully illustrated by Benjamin Dewey, it’s a must for all fantasy buffs.

This put me exactly at 2,066 pages of the 96,766 projected for this year. I know, a huge chunk is still left, but, one step at a time.

Right now I’m reading two books, The Lord of the Rings and Dragonlance: The Legend of Huma, the second one on my Kindle, and to be completely honest, it’s going to take a while to adjust from printed books to digital ones.

Which brings me to the announcement that, slowly but surely, I will be migrating to digital books, and only buying the ones I considered from transcendental authors.

I have been doing it with comic-books, not the smoothest of transitions but the truth of it is that I’m running out of walls in my house. I’ll give them a good new home, promise.

So, for now I’ll focus on getting my house back to normal and fashioning a new reading nook, which consequently is still missing the key component of a new under the stairs bookcase. Hopefully it will be in place by the end of the month. Pictures pending.

Reading for this week:

Books

  • The Lord of the Rings (currently at page 141)
  • Dragonlance: the Legend of Huma (currently at page 21)

Graphics Novels

  • Ten Grand Vol. 1 and Vol. 2

Back to it.

Happy Readings!!!

(Y-10) First 1,000 pages

What a difference two years makes.

On the eight year of reading, I was focused on achieving a life-long goal of reading a book for each week of the year.

I came really close, 44 books in 52 weeks.

With this focus, my total page suffered a lot.  Because I was centered on reading books and nothing else.

Last year, the ninth, I was all over the place, not a definitive tendency could be determined.

But this year, I’m locked and loaded, there are two main themes in my goal for the year.

The First, and the main one, is to achieve the gargantuan task of the page count ahead of me, 96,766 total pages, from which I can gladly say knocked off the first 1,000 (1,136 pages to be precise).

This is mainly because I started reading comics, again. There were a lot a reasons of why i stopped all together, but the principal one, beside my focus on book this past two years, was that I suffered from a saturation of all comic-book related stuff floating around, I was feed-up.

I guess now, the idea that the cinematic universe of comics are one thing totally separated from what I love to read.

So, it truly is a big difference when it comes to quick page count, this gives me a great hope, that at least, this is a year of more than 50,000 pages and consequently the best year in the 10 years I have been doing this.

As for the second theme, the focus on the series of books I’m reading, a true fantasy galore, starting with my two gateway books, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and topping it off with some fantasy series I have been meaning to read for a very long time, The Legend of Drizzt, The Malazan Book of the Fallen and The Black Company.

There is the path-way for this year, just have to ramble on.

Happy Readings!!!

(Y-10) Bullet Journal, an update

After some minor tweaks, and taking the wonderful ideas of many bullet journals you can find online, I finally started keeping a physical record of my daily reading.

It has helped in having a sense of where my reading is and where it’s going.

Here are a few examples.

Here I’m counting down days and how productive they were. Lots of red with some green in the forecast.

Here is my day to day reading.

Being a bit obsessive (the understatement of the decade) is great to have some physical outlet that helps me see how much I did on any given day.

Happy readings!!!

(Y-10) First book of the year and onward…

In the early hours of this past Saturday, I suffered a classic episode of insomnia.

So I put my usual condition to good use and finally finish The Hobbit.

The first time I read was about 17 years ago, and let me tell you that, although is still an amazing book, I found it quite different.

Many things I remember, but there were passages that my mind found like they were totally new.

That is the magic of books, no matter how many time we come back to them they should us something new every time.

This particular edition was a gift from my beautiful wife and I cherish even more, on top of this, the final illustration by Alan Lee is truly breathtaking.

With the Hobbit on the bag, the next book is, naturally, The Lord of the Rings. The 50th-anniversary edition was also a gift, actually, I received them together, along with an Atlas of Middle-Earth.

These two books were my gateway to a broader world.

So, with this, my reading has picked up and I’ll try to breach the gap between the schedule I proposed for this year and where I actually am at this moment.

The total page count had a boost because this morning I finished reading Fight Club 2, if you liked the original novel, and are not really into comics, you’re going to have a hard time adjusting to reading its sequel in this format, but, give it a try it’s well worth it.

The total for (Y-10) sits at 866 pages, with the goal of reaching 1,500 by this next weekend.

(Y-10) Queer Lodgings

Well, it has been a really rocky start to my reading year.

I fell behind with the reading schedule and I’m about to lose it.

Right now I just past the middle point of The Hobbit, they just met the eagle king and Beorn.

To be honest, the title of this chapter of the Hobbit, Queer Lodgings, fits perfectly with the last two weeks of my living arrangement, and with everything in my house in piles and dust everywhere has not helped much to my progress.

But, apparently, it all ends today, just need tidy-up and will be back to normal but with some much-needed improvements.

The only thing I have been reading, in the endless commute home and the occasional line, is some comic books on my phone.

So the total for this year is 190 pitiful pages.

Need to get back on track, and I think this weekend will have the secret formula, some wandering and lots of caffeine.

Back to it.

Happy Readings!!!

(Y-10) Riddles in the Dark

My reading has progress slowly but surely.

It has been a whirlwind this week, with a few renovations at the house there has not been a moment to stop and read.

But I’m confident come the weekend this will be sorted out.

Right now I’m at the chapter were Bilbo meets Gollum.

And the ring of power it’s at hand.

The total for (Y-10) is 123 pages, I have squease a few comic books during the commute home.

Back to it, Happy Readings!!!

(Y-10) In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

And thus begins my journey of reading for this the tenth year.

The selection for this year recurrent genre of literature is no surprise.

Around my 17th birthday I became hooked-on literature, before that I was on a steady diet of comic books, but my love for reading can be traced back to one book, in particular, Lord of the Rings.

It blew me away and naturally, I wanted more, so I went and found the next book to read which, consequently, was the Hobbit, the prequel to my beloved Lord of the Rings.

It only seems fitting to start this year journey with the spark that ignited this fire.

For this time I will read The Hobbit illustrated edition, with some breathtaking pieces of art by long Middle-Earth expert, Alan Lee.

Also for this year reading log, I started a new bullet journal, with some modifications to help keep track of every day without being a burden.

And lastly, year (Y-9) was a good one here is a quick recap.

Total Pages: 17,225

Total Books Read:  23 books.

Shortest Book: J.R.R Tolkien: Architect of Middle-Earth by Daniel Grota with 197 pages.

Longest Book: Apocalipsis by Stephen King with 1,584 pages.

Tomorrow I’ll post my first day of reading and some new photos from the latest exhibition at the Museum of Art.

Happy Readings!!!

(Y-9) the final night

So, at last the end of this year read is upon me.

I’m going to take this last night and try to finish the final book of this almost extinct year.

With some coffee and chocolate I’ll save good bye and say hello to the most demanding year yet.

Tomorrow, I’ll post my final page count, images of the first book on the year and my new bullet journal that will keep me on track with my reading.

Good night and Happy Readings!!!

(Y-9) 2 days…

For my final task of this year of reading I decided to tackle the latest Star Wars novel I bought, Aftermath.

With two days left in this year and 250 pages to go on the book I think I’ll finish off this year with a bang.

So, 250 pages, two nights, challenge accepted.

Also I’m really excited because today my new mini-journals arrived.

Just in time to start this year of reading bullet journal.

Many things to come.

Happy Readings!!!

(Y-9) 3,288 days later

Can’t believe I started this journey more than 9 years ago.

It has been really rewarding and at times a great source of comfort.

As I get ready to tackle a new year I start to project numbers and start to see the true depth of how far behind I really am.

So here is what I come to affectionately named Panic Calculations.

3,288 days since I begin Lost in a Million Pages

200,798 total pages read.

61 average of pages read per day.

16,360  days will take me to read 1,000,000 pages (with the aforementioned average).

friday 25 of July 2053 will be the date I will finish with my crazy journey (again, considering my average).

72 years, 1 month and 20 days will be my age at that date.

Some 22 years later that my original goal.

As you can see I have a great deal of road ahead of me.

And with 96,756 pages looming in the horizon for (Y-10), its do or die time.

So, wish me an uninterrupted flow of books, caffeine, and long nights with excellent lighting.

Happy Readings!!!

azr.

P.S.

On the night of Friday the 13th of October, I’ll post the final page count and raise a glass for dwindling year.
