Today is the day

I’m still in a bit of disbelief, but there’s only 25 pages left to reach the first 500,000 pages of my project.

When it’s official, I’ll post a run down of the first part of the journey that has taken a bit longer than I expected, but finally, it is becoming a reality.

49 hours and the 2,822 pages

This year´s reading has been nothing short of extraordinary. Taking into account that started on June 7, that´s only 32 days ago, my total for the year sits comfortably at 14,617 registered pages, giving quite a big head start on my reading schedule, which right now is 51 days ahead. This breaks any of the records from previous years. I will not get ahead of myself, but with the current pace, the projections for the year’s total sit at 167,639 pages, a monstrous number, that quite honestly will be almost impossible to achieve, but I’m fairly certain that at least the 70,000-page mark will appear for the first time.

Even more important than that is the fact that I’m only 2,822 pages away from achieving the first half of my project, which would be reaching 500,000 total pages. The projection for the current date to do so is currently August 8, precisely a month from today. But with still the same amount left ahead of me, this becomes a game of time, and any little room gained is a step closer to the ultimate goal.

The plan is to reach that first milestone by next Sunday, giving me 7 days of intense reading, and a tight schedule of around 7 daily hours of reading, including the first mountain book of the year, Jerusalem by Alan Moore, with its 1,255 pages and intricate plot has proven to be quite the challenge. I’ll throw, as per usual, a healthy amount of graphic novels, and hopefully, when the dust clears, the 500,00-page milestone would have been conquered.

First 10,000 pages of (Y-16)

I´ll start with a statement: I haven´t slept that great for the past 26 days. But fortunately, this situation has been harnessed to achieve the amazing numbers that the current year is presenting. It comes as no wonder that this is probably the fastness I have arrived at the 10,000-page mark, it took on 20 days to do so. That means that my daily average is around 500 pages, which, I must confess, has come from the iridescent screen of my tablet, late at night, while I trek thru some wonderous world contained in the pages of Mangas.

Thanks to the consistency of my reading the first half of this goal is well within reach, as I stated in past posts, my goal was to achieve such a coveted milestone by the middle of September, well let me tell you that I´m there right now, with a projected date of September 16 of the current year, almost to the date of what my desire was, actually, a day earlier.

That leaves only 7,396 pages to brush that first half that I have been so desperately chasing, and quite frankly for a minute there, I wasn´t so sure that my willpower was enough to carry me home. More than once I would question whether this was truly something that was worth pursuing, as the world turns, this personal goal has become the breath that has kept me going.

But as always, my focus redirects to the next task at hand, which in this particular case would be getting the end of the journey closer to my 50th birthday. Right now the projected date to reach the 1,000,000-page mark is August 24, 2038, this puts me 7 years, 2 months, and 19 days behind schedule. Considering that on February 18 of this year, around 6 months ago, I was 9 years behind schedule, this giant leap is a step in the direction that I was hoping.

I´ll hold on to hope that these numbers keep decreasing as the months go by, of course, backed by the consistency of my reading and the acknowledgment that this journey will be sometimes a lonely one, full of moments between darkness and light and that this should become an instrument that not only will nourish my curious mind but also will help to heal my broken soul.

Reciting my mantra: “One step at a time, one page at a time”, I´ll leave you, not to succumb to the arms of Morpheus, but to get pleasantly lost between ink and beautiful words.

Feeling Nostalgic

Today, I woke up feeling nostalgic and in desperate need of a good ol’ fashion readathon. Sadly, my favorite one, 24in48, had to take a hiatus. Their last edition was in February 2021, and they are really missed.

For this weekend, I will take part of their main structure, which is to read at least 24 hours in a period of 48 hours, pretty much one whole day over a weekend. Also, one of the coolest parts of the whole experience, they used to log all of the participants’ books and tally how many books and pages the collective bookworms read over the weekend.

I have already logged in almost a couple of hours, and hopefully, by the end of today, I’ll get close to or over 10 hours of reading.

If you’re interested in past readathons, you should check out their blog on 24 in 48 readathon. I hope someday soon they can come back and make another edition. For now, I’ll do a one man readathon in their honor.

Daily Journal: June 18, 2023

Once again, I find myself coming back to this cathartic device, which is even more necessary nowadays. There isn´t anything, besides reading, that can put my mind at ease faster that sharing my nonsense in written form, making a little noise in hopes that someone will find some solace between these lines.

With my reading from yesterday and today, I made some significant steps toward the main focus of the upcoming months, getting to the 500,000-page milestone no later than the middle of September. The good news is that, according to my projections, the new date for reaching the said goal is now October 27, 2023. There are only 12,022 pages between me and the first half of my project.

Today´s reading has been filled with really diverse material. I finished No Country for Old Men, by the late great, which is still really hard to think that this week he passed away, Cormac McCarthy, this was a re-read to celebrate his illustrious career that will live eternally on the brutally beautiful prose that he created. The other book that I’m working on is the behemoth written by Alan Moore, Jerusalem. Expanding 1,255 pages, currently on page 84, it explores the streets of Mr. Moore´s native city of Northampton, elevating them to mythical proportions. My goal for today is to reach page 142, following a schedule to finish it no later than July 3.

As always, and I know that´s pretty late on my neck of the woods, I´ll try to squeeze in some graphic novels in between the slow progress that novels represent. For tonight´s menu there´s volumes 6 and 7 of the manga series Battle Angel Alita, thankfully, I did not let the not-so-highly regarded movie adaptation deter me from giving the series a chance, it´s pretty fucking awesome.

Redux

I can assure you that I’m alive and let’s say holding on to dear life, to say that I’m fine would be an exaggeration, but as long as you are breathing, it’s better to make the most of it.

I have two mayor things to go over since I have been on an accidental hiatus. Not writing was not on my plans, but I think there’s no time like the present to get right back on the horse.

I first thing is that my fifteen year of reading culminated with my 42nd birthday, and what a year it was. My grand total was 66,185 pages, that’s 1,243 extra pages that what was projected for the year, and 386 pages more than last year’s extraordinary results, making it my best year on record.

Year sixteen projected quota is 64,680 pages, and my reading has been impressively strong. Only 10 days into it, and I already have 4,282 registered pages. If by some miraculous effort, the pace is maintained, or at least kept around 300 daily pages, I’m looking at a 100,000-page year. Being more realistic, my sight is fixed on breaking the 70,000-page mark.

On a bigger scope, there’s only 13,157 pages left in order to reach the first 500,000 pages. Right now, the projections put the date of achieving this gargantuan task on November 9 of this year.

Thus, my focus is dead centered on getting there much sooner, to give purpose, and more importantly, some breathing room to get to the 1,000,000-page mark by my 50th birthday, the task at hand will be to move up that date to around the middle of September, around the 16th or 17th, marking the beginning of the steep and final ascent to my ultimate goal.
